Enlarged male breasts, medically called gynaecomastia, are among the most common concerns we hear from men in our Amritsar clinic. Many of them have carried it silently for years before asking for help.

The good news is that it’s well understood, it’s not your fault, and it’s very treatable. This guide explains what gynaecomastia is, why it happens, and what your options are.

Key takeaways

Gynaecomastia is an increase in glandular breast tissue in males. It is not the same as chest fat.

It is common at three life stages: newborn, puberty and older age.

Many cases in teenagers settle by themselves. Persistent cases usually don’t.

Surgery is the most reliable way to correct long-standing gynaecomastia.

A hard, painful, one-sided lump or nipple discharge should always be checked by a doctor promptly.

What is gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia (also spelt gynecomastia) means enlargement of the male breast gland. It can range from a small, tender lump under the nipple to breasts that look quite like a woman’s. It may affect one side or both, and the two sides often differ in size.

Two conditions are easily confused:

True gynaecomastia involves firm, rubbery glandular tissue, usually right behind the nipple.

Pseudogynaecomastia (“chest fat”) is extra fatty tissue with little or no gland. It is common in men who are overweight.

Many men have a mix of both. A proper examination is the only way to know which applies to you, and the answer decides which treatment will work best.

What causes enlarged male breasts?

Everyone has both testosterone and oestrogen. Gynaecomastia usually appears when the balance tilts towards oestrogen, or when breast tissue becomes more sensitive to it. Common triggers include:

Natural hormonal phases

Puberty: Hormone levels fluctuate, and a large share of teenage boys develop some breast enlargement. It often fades within months to a couple of years.

Ageing: Testosterone gradually falls in later life, and body fat rises, which can make gynaecomastia more likely.

Medicines and substances

Some prescription medicines, including certain heart, stomach-acid, anti-anxiety, antifungal and prostate medicines

Anabolic steroids and some bodybuilding supplements

Regular heavy alcohol use and some recreational drugs

Medical conditions

Liver or kidney disease

Thyroid problems

Low testosterone (hypogonadism)

Rarely, hormone-producing tumours

In a fair number of men, no single cause is ever found. That doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you. Please don’t stop any prescribed medicine on your own. Speak to your doctor first.

Signs and symptoms

Swelling or fullness of one or both breasts

A firm, rubbery disc of tissue under the nipple

Tenderness or sensitivity, especially in the early stages

Puffy or enlarged nipples and areolae

Beyond the physical signs, many men tell us it affects their confidence, clothing choices and willingness to be shirtless in front of others. These feelings are valid. Wanting to feel comfortable in your own body is a perfectly good reason to seek treatment.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if you notice any of the following:

A hard, fixed or irregular lump, especially on one side only

Nipple discharge, or skin changes such as dimpling, redness or ulceration

Rapidly increasing breast size

Persistent pain

Breast enlargement that has lasted more than a year or two, or that troubles you emotionally

Male breast cancer is uncommon, but it does happen. Checking a new lump early is always the sensible thing to do. Most of the time the result is reassuring.

How is gynaecomastia diagnosed?

At your consultation, the surgeon will:

Ask about your medical history, medicines, alcohol and supplement use, and how long the change has been present

Examine your chest, including how firm the tissue is and whether it is glandular or fatty

Advise blood tests, an ultrasound or other scans if needed to look for an underlying cause and to rule out anything more serious

You’ll get clear explanations and an honest opinion. Not everyone needs surgery, and we’ll tell you if you don’t.

Treatment options

1. Watchful waiting

If gynaecomastia is recent, especially during puberty, it may settle without treatment. We usually review after a few months.

2. Treating the underlying cause

If a medicine, substance or medical condition is contributing, addressing it (under your doctor’s guidance) can help reduce the enlargement. Long-standing tissue, however, often doesn’t shrink fully even after the trigger is removed.

3. Lifestyle measures

Healthy weight loss, regular exercise and cutting back on alcohol help reduce chest fat. They cannot remove glandular tissue, so if the gland is the problem, diet and gym work alone may disappoint you.

4. Medication

In selected cases a doctor may consider hormone-modifying medicines, usually when the swelling is recent and painful. It is not suitable for everyone, and results vary.

5. Surgery (male breast reduction)

For persistent gynaecomastia, surgery is the most dependable solution. Depending on what your chest contains, it may involve:

Liposuction to remove excess fat

Gland excision to remove firm glandular tissue

Skin removal in the larger or more severe cases where the skin is stretched

At Curves ‘n’ Contours we use liposuction-assisted subcutaneous mastectomy. Through very small, discreet incisions, the surgeon removes both the fatty and glandular tissue to create a flatter, natural-looking male chest contour. Because the incisions are small, marks are minimal and typically fade well over time. Your exact plan is tailored to your chest.

What to expect: procedure and recovery

(Recovery varies from person to person, and your surgeon will give you specific advice.)

Before surgery: A full consultation, examination and any tests needed. You will be told how to prepare, including which medicines to avoid.

The procedure: Usually done under anaesthesia, and many patients go home the same day or after a short stay.

First week: Mild swelling, bruising and soreness are normal. Most people return to desk-type work within about a week.

Weeks 2 to 6: You’ll usually wear a compression garment, which helps with swelling and contouring. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are avoided for a few weeks.

Final result: Swelling settles gradually over a few months, and the chest reaches its final, refined shape.

Risks and safety

Every surgery carries some risk. With male breast reduction these can include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, changes in nipple sensation, contour irregularities, asymmetry, or the need for a touch-up. Choosing a qualified, experienced plastic surgeon and following aftercare instructions closely lowers these risks significantly.

Results are long-lasting once the gland is removed. Keeping a stable weight and avoiding triggers such as steroid use helps protect the outcome.

Why choose Curves ‘n’ Contours?

Qualified plastic surgeons: Our team includes Dr. Gurinder Singh, Dr. Ajay Abrol and Dr. Amanpreet Singh, all with MBBS, MS and MCh qualifications.

Safety first: Standardised protocols and safe practices are central to how we work.

Honest, personal advice: You’ll get a plan built around your body, not a one-size-fits-all package.

A respectful, private environment: Many of our patients are nervous about this consultation. Our aim is that you leave feeling understood, not judged.

Patients often mention that our doctors take time to explain things in simple, clear terms, and that is exactly how we like to work.

Frequently asked questions

Is gynaecomastia dangerous?
Usually not. It is most often harmless, but a hard, one-sided lump or nipple discharge should be examined promptly to rule out other conditions.

Will it go away on its own?
In puberty, often yes. In adults, or when it lasts beyond a year or two, it rarely resolves completely without treatment.

Can exercise get rid of it?
Exercise reduces fat but can’t remove glandular tissue. Chest workouts may build muscle underneath, but the gland remains.

Will there be visible scars?
Incisions are small and placed discreetly, so marks are minimal and usually fade well. Your surgeon will show you where they’ll be.

Can it come back?
Once glandular tissue is removed, it is unlikely to return. Significant weight gain, steroid use or certain medicines can occasionally cause changes again.

How long before I can go back to the gym?
Usually light activity after a couple of weeks and full workouts after about four to six weeks, depending on your surgeon’s advice.

Take the first step

You don’t have to keep hiding your chest or wondering whether anything can be done. A simple, private conversation is often all it takes to get clarity.

Book a consultation at Curves ‘n’ Contours
📍 2376, C Block, Ranjit Avenue, Amritsar, Punjab 143001
📞 7888315588 | 9815917064
🕙 Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM (Sunday by appointment)
💬 WhatsApp: 9815917064

Written by the team at Curves ‘n’ Contours, Amritsar | Medically reviewed by Dr. Gurinder Singh, MBBS, MS, MCh (Plastic Surgery Read more…

[19
22,24,23,20,21
post-243","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-gynecomastia-treatment-in-amritsar","tag-amritsar-cosmetic-surgery","tag-enlarged-male-breasts","tag-gynecomastia-treatment-punjab","tag-male-breast-reduction-in-amritsar","tag-male-chest-reduction

Gynecomastia Treatment in Amritsar: What You Need

<meta name="description" content="Understand gynecomastia and find the right treatment in Amritsar.
